LOS ANGELES – A federal judge on Thursday tentatively threw out the convictions of a Missouri mother for her role in a MySpace hoax directed at a 13-year-old neighbor girl who ended up committing suicide.
U.S. District Judge George Wu said he was acquitting Lori Drew of misdemeanor counts of accessing computers without authorization but stressed the ruling was tentative until he issues it in writing. He noted the case of a judge who changed his mind after ruling.
Drew showed no reaction to the decision.
She was convicted in November, but the judge said that if she is to be found guilty of illegally accessing computers, anyone who has ever violated the social networking site’s terms of service would be guilty of a misdemeanor. That would be unconstitutional, he said.

For 45 minutes the Myers were kept prisoner in their own home.

The Myers say the deputies knew immediately they had raided the wrong home. They say it could have ended with an apology, until the couple heard two shots from the yard.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) Prosecutors have charged three former hospital workers with illegally accessing the patient records of a Little Rock television news anchorwoman brought to the hospital after being viciously attacked at her home.
In documents filed Monday in U.S. District Court, prosecutors say the three former St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center staff members improperly accessed the records of KATV anchorwoman Anne Pressly on Oct. 20, the day she was brought in, or the day after. She died Oct. 25, having never regained consciousness.

The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund filed several lawsuits on behalf of minority employees alleging that promotional examinations were racially biased, obtaining judgments or settlements that guaranteed their promotion, sometimes ahead of white employees with higher scores.
In one case against the New York City Police Department, “we obtained quota promotions for Latinos and African Americans to the rank of sergeant,” the group said in a May 1992 report.
Questions surrounding a similar case have already become a central focus of Judge Sotomayor’s candidacy for the high court. Last year, she joined colleagues on the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in upholding a decision by New Haven, Conn., authorities to junk results from a firefighter promotional exam because black applicants scored too low to advance. Britain’s violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it is revealed today. Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa - widely considered one of the world’s most dangerous countries. The figures comes on the day new Home Secretary Alan Johnson makes his first major speech on crime, promising to be tough on loutish behaviour.
In the decade following the party’s election in 1997, the number of recorded violent attacks soared by 77 per cent to 1.158million - or more than two every minute. The figures, compiled from reports released by the European Commission and United Nations, also show:

In retrospect, we might discover that 1883 was a most significant year. We’re familiar with 1848 giving us The Communist Manifesto and 1859 giving us The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. But 1883 gave us three portentous happenings. These seemingly unrelated happenings turned history toward socialism.
1. Karl Marx died on March 14, 1883, and was buried in Highgate Cemetery in London, England. The assumption that Communism died with him was logical since only six people attended his funeral. But the truth is that it had not yet begun its murderous journey through the 20th century.
2. John Maynard Keynes was born on June 5, 1883, in Cambridge, England. His political, economic, and moral influence continues to affect every American.
3. The Fabian Socialist Society was an offshoot of The Fellowship of the New Life, which was born in October 1883 in London, England.
Today’s financial events illustrate that America is not exempt from being led toward socialism. Predictions differ, depending on one’s perspective, as to whether this will be a socialistic paradise or a socialistic hell. Time will tell. In the meantime, we’d do well to listen to warnings from the past.

Horned gods were worshipped in Europe and the rest of the world from the dawn of humanity. They were always part of a pagan belief system, a polytheistic belief system, which accepted many gods. Tribal pagan belief systems still in existence share this characteristic: the tribes worship their tribal gods, and other gods mentioned by strangers are not evil, or non-existant, they are simply not their gods.
There were many ancient monotheistic religions such as Judaism, but again these were tribal religions, which had no urge to prosyletise, to “spread the word”. Jehova was the god of the Jews, and they felt no need to persuade other tribes to worship him as well.
Christianity changed all that. It felt an overpowering need to make their one god the god of everybody else within range, and so they invented the missionary. But to do this it was necessary to discredit the old pagan gods, and in particular the goddess and the horned god.
Pagan pantheons never include gods of evil. Pagan gods are aspects of Nature, and in Nature there can be no evil; it exists only in the human imagination. They frequently include trickster gods, such as Loki, and gods can have a reputation for being unwise to be involved with, but not actual evil. Monotheistic religions, on the other hand, require a god of evil as an adversary of their god of good. Otherwise, why would you need Him ? An obvious way to discredit the horned god and justify punishment of his worshippers is to say that he is, in fact, the god of evil in the new religion. And has been all along.

The right-wing extremist party Yisrael Beitenu, led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Lieberman, recently proposed a draft law requiring all citizens of Israel to swear an oath of loyalty to Zionism or face deportation. It is obvious that the Palestinians of the 1948 areas are the targets of this law. Earlier, the Israeli government accepted a draft law forbidding them from commemorating the anniversary of the Nakba. These laws are in line with a longstanding policy by various Israeli governments to push them off their lands and nullify their “demographic threat” to the state’s Jewish majority. Source
Carrying “Hate not welcome here” signs, members of Anti-Racist Action Calgary marched through the community to Riley Park, where they held a brief speech. Three months ago, the group spearheaded a counter-protest against an Aryan Guard white pride march downtown, which resulted in a violent clash.
“There were absolutely no arrests made. No confrontation with the Aryan Guard,” duty inspector Rob Williams said of Saturday’s rally. “We had a police presence there . . . in case the situation turned bad, which it did not. We’re quite pleased with how this event went today.”

The mother of two children seized by social workers after her daughter went to school with white supremacist symbols on her body pleaded with the court on Friday to let her kids stay in foster care.

In a rare reversal, China’s government gave in to domestic and international pressure and backed down Tuesday from a rule that would have required personal computers sold in the country to have Internet-filtering software.
Just hours before the rule was to have taken effect, the government said it would postpone the requirement for the “Green Dam” software. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said it made the decision partly because some PC markets were having difficulty meeting the deadline. It did not say whether the plan might be revived.
The change of course averted a possible scuffle with Washington. Top U.S. officials had protested the plan after it was imposed abruptly in May, calling it a barrier to trade. Greece’s government returned two ancient statues stolen from Albania almost two decades ago.
The headless marble statues, one dating back to the 2nd century B.C. and the other to the 2nd century A.D., were handed to Albanian Culture Minister Ylli Pango in Athens today. They were recovered by the Greek authorities in 1997 and identified as having been stolen from the Butrint archaeological site in 1991.

The Church of Scientology, in its efforts to investigate and attack its “enemies,” kept files on five Washington federal judges, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, other congressmen, Jacqueline Onassis, the Better Business Bureau and the American Medical Association, according to Scientology documents in the possession of federal investigators.
The Scientologists’ files, summarized in a 525-page inventory filed in court by the federal government, were in many cases marked “Eyes Only,” “Top Secret,” “Enemy Names” and “Battle Plans.” Their contents were coded with phrases like “Operation Cut Throat,” “Espionage” and “Operation Big Mouth.”
The documents, which were seized under subpoena by federal agents in raids of Scientology offices here and in Los Angeles last summer, include orders from top Scientology officials to investigate and attack certain government agencies, private businesses and individuals.
Among other Scientology property seized in the raids were memos on how to obtain false identities and tap telephones, a lockpicking kit, electronic eavesdropping equipment, two 22-caliber pistols and a leather blackjack, according to the government inventory filed in federal court in Los Angeles. In 1965 the Canadian Jewish Congress hired a spy, John Garrity, to infiltrate the Canadian Nazi Party, and even went so far as to spy on at least one other Jewish group. This rather bizarre chapter in Canadian Jewish history has come under scrutiny recently following the release of Canadian lawyer and journalist Ezra Levant’s new book, Shakedown, in which he makes the claim that in the 1960s, the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) paid John Garrity, “a small-time mercenary, to build up the fledgling Canadian Nazi Party.”
Levant argues that although Garrity’s “mission was justified as an attempt to learn more about neo-Nazism,” Garrity and CJC ultimately helped turn “the Canadian Nazi Party into a media sensation.”
Levant wrote in the Ottawa Citizen on May 16 that in his view, the CJC has always been eager to “trump up the… specter of Nazis in Canada as a pretext to get censorship laws.” Levant told The Jerusalem Post he believes the CJC’s conduct in 1965-66 was designed “to convince Parliament to give them more ‘hate’ laws.” Source
Justices rule 5-4 that New Haven, Conn., was wrong to deny promotions to firefighters who outscored black colleagues on a test. The decision overturns a ruling supported by Sonia Sotomayer.
The Supreme court ruled today that firefighters who lost promotions in New Haven, Conn., were victims of illegal discrimination, holding that employers should not rely on “raw racial statistics” to set aside a fair test.
The ruling is a clear win for the White fire fighters, but does not appear to make a sweeping changes in the law. The Justices did not say, for example, that it is unconstitutional for public employers ever to consider the racial makeup of their workforce. And it does not strike down the part of the Civil Rights Act that says employers should avoid job standards that have a “desperate impact”on minorities. ARTICLE
The story begins in 1960, when Stuart Barber, a civilian working at the Pentagon in the Navy’s long-range planning office, devised what he called the “Strategic Island Concept”. Barber was a “defence intellectual”, one of a cadre of academics and experts who, in the early years of the Cold War, helped expand the notion of national security into a far-reaching vision of American power and influence. Like others in Washington, he feared that as former European colonies achieved independence, they would become inhospitable sites for military outposts, limiting America’s ability to project power into regions – like the Middle East – critical to the struggle against the Soviet Union.
The United States, Barber argued, needed to build bases in remote locations, close to hot spots but at a safe remove from local troublemakers– the only places, Barber wrote in a memo to his superiors in the John F Kennedy administration, that “could be safely held under full control of the West”. Islands were the natural solution, but it would be necessary to select those whose indigenous populations would not cause what Barber delicately referred to as “political complications”.

By 1963, when American planners resolved to build a base in the Chagos Archipelago, the islands were home to roughly 1000 people, British subjects employed on the island’s coconut plantations. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) Prosecutors have charged three former hospital workers with illegally accessing the patient records of a Little Rock television news anchorwoman brought to the hospital after being viciously attacked at her home.

The story begins in 1960, when Stuart Barber, a civilian working at the Pentagon in the Navy’s long-range planning office, devised what he called the “Strategic Island Concept”.
