Two American pilots have been killed in a helicopter crash north of Baghdad.

The US Army AH-64 Apache attack helicopter crashed in a field and burst into flames at about 11.45am on Monday in al-Mashahda, 30km north of the capital.

Iraqi journalist Ziyad al-Samarai told Aljazeera that the aircraft was hit by a rocket in the farm-rich area.

The journalist said a meeting of officials was being held in al-Mashahda police station at the time and US military vehicles and helicopters had surrounded the area. Continued>>>

Russians are by 16 per cent more immune to HIV than other European nations, U.S. scientists said in a survey published in the Journal of Medical Genetics, the ITAR-TASS news agency reports.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Health insurance premiums will cost families and employers an extra $922 on average this year to cover the costs of caring for the uninsured, according to a report released Wednesday.

With the added cost, the yearly premiums for a family with coverage through an employer will average $10,979 in 2005, said the report from consumer group Families USA.

By 2010, the additional costs for the uninsured will be $1,502, and total premiums will hit $17,273. In 11 states, the costs of the uninsured will exceed $2,000 per family. Continued>>>

Although our country is still suffering from the damages caused by the so-called “black civil rights movement,” it looks as though our country is about to face another such movement; this time from the Mexicans. 1200 immigrants marched down Main Street Hartford, Connecticut waving American flags and the flags of their own countries. They demanded their contributions to the city be recognized and sought reforms to immigration law that would allow them to work legally. The group announced the march a month ago in response to Mayor Mark Boughton’s proposal that state police be deputized to enforce federal immigration laws. Although Boughton says his now-stalled plan was meant to call attention to a broken federal immigration system, immigrants took it as a frontal assault. Marchers were asking for Boughton to withdraw his request to have state police enforce immigration and for immigrants to be respected regardless of legal status. The march went alot more peacefully than police had expected, with the only opposition present being a man dressed as Uncle Sam, carrying a sign that said “I want you out of my country.” He was greeted with hisses. This march marks the first time that immigrants from various “Latin-American” countries have united in a political cause. “Usually, politicians like to try to divide and conquer,” said Pastor Juana Jourdain Villavicencio of the Hispanic United Church of Christ in Danbury. “But in unity, we have conquered.” more>>>

In a 6-3 ruling the Supreme Court overturned the conviction of Thomas Miller-El, who was convicted in Texas courts and sentenced to death for the 1985 murder of a 25 year old motel clerk in Dallas. Miller-El argued that his conviction should be overturned because his jury included only one black. He argues that the Texas prosecutors were practicing discrimination intentionally and that their training manuals advised removing blacks or jews from death penalty juries on the theory that those groups would be more sympathetic to criminal defendants. High courts in Texas found that the jury pool was not racially determined, but the Supreme Court disagreed. The Supreme Court said that “the Texas prosecutor unfairly stacked his jury with whites.” The Justices who dissented (Thomas, Scalia, and Rehnquist) argued that Texas prosecutors had offered enough evidence that exclusions were made for reasons other than race. For instance, the state’s explanation that jurors were struck based on their hostility to the death penalty is plausible, and the alleged racial motivation behind prosecutors’ decision to shuffle the jury pool is only speculative, wrote Thomas, the court’s only black member. “The fact was, the degree of hostility by the black jurors to the death penalty was quite high. If there is a different attitude of the black jurors than to the white jurors, you can’t fault prosecutors for striking more of the black jurors,” Scalia said. more>>>

The police in two New Hampshire towns are using a state law against trespassing to crack down on illegal immigrants who enter the state. The police say they are using this law to prosecute illegals because Washington is not doing enough to secure U.S. borders. In the small towns of Hudson and New Ipswich, police have charged 4 Mexicans and 4 Brazilians, who, if found guilty, will have to pay a $1000 fine. The Mexican consulate, concerned the charges will be upheld in court and set a national precedent, has hired an attorney for the last Mexican immigrant charged. The developers of a new neighborhood in Lubbock, Texas have decided to created a subdivision that will be sex-offender free. Homeowners wishing to live in the neighborhood will be required to pass criminal background checks and no convicted sex offenders will be allowed. The idea was inspired by the killings of two Florida girls — 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford and 13-year-old Sarah Lunde, who were killed by sex offenders. On the new subdivision’s 665 housing lots, builders will have to run background checks on prospective buyers and anyone who will be living in the house, even juveniles. The Philadelphia school system will soon become the first in the nation to force all high school students to take a year of “African and African-American studies” in order to graduate. Leaders of the school district expect this new requirement to give students “a more accurate view of history.” The required course will cover topics such as African civilizations, civil rights, and black nationalism. The Philadelphia school system is 65 percent black and only 14 percent white, but some students are upset about the focus on blacks while ignoring other groups. President Bush and Prime Minister Blair have met to discuss spending more money to “aid” Africa. Blair called for the cancellation of all debt in the poor nations of Africa as well as doubling financial aid to that continent over 10 years. Bush announced that the United States would spend $674 million in additional resources on African in such places as Ethiopia and Eritrea. Additionally, Bush noted that U.S. aid for Africa has tripled during his presidency. “Helping those who suffer in Africa is a central commitment of my presidency,” Bush said. “We’re committed to doing more in the future.” Blair welcomed the announcement and expressed that his only concern was that the money was not “lost to corruption or squandered on nations that don’t aggressively embrace democratic reforms. In a recent case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court, Cutter v. Wilkinson, an ordained Christian Identity minister (and others) who are currently inmates in Ohio prisons, claimed that the State of Ohio has violated the Freedom of Religion Clause of the 1st Amendment by refusing to allow “non-traditional” religious groups the freedom to practice while in prison. Under a 2000 federal law, states that recieve federal money must accomodate prisoners’ religious beliefs by granting them access to religious literature, ceremonial items, worship time, special haircuts, and special meals unless the warden can prove that the government has a compelling reason not to. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously in favor of the Christian Identity minister and others. Elizabeth Cooke, a clinical law professor at Ohio State University who represented inmates in the court case, said they “will press ahead with accommodation requests, including hammer charms for prisoners who are members of Asatru and worship old Norse deities.” more>>>

A black Alabama woman is attempting to file a class action lawsuit against Dillard’s Department Store because she alleges its salons charge more to style black hair than white hair. The woman believes that this price difference is based solely on racial discrimination. Dillard’s argues that “Prices for salon services are based upon the level of experience of the stylist, degree of service, amount of time required and the cost of materials provided to the customer.”

Everyone knows that schools are over-crowded, but immigration plays a much bigger role in this problem than most people are willing to accept. “In 2003, a total of 22 percent of students had at least one foreign-born parent, including 91 percent of Asians and 66 percent of Hispanics.” While the midwestern states have had a decrease in their school population, even to the point of having to close schools, those schools close to the Mexican border can not accomodate this new “racial and ethnic transformation.” Schools along the U.S. southern border are even having increased problems with illegal immigrants driving across the border into the U.S. each day to attend school. Arizona’s School Superintendent even said in a news report that the mexican “non-residents” attending school in just one district costs the state of Arizona close to $400,000 a year. Additionally, race issues are coming to the forefront with this new inflation of non-white enrollees. In the 1970’s, about 80% of students were white. In 2003, only 60 percent were white. And now, with fewer whites in the schools, officials believe that there should be fewer white teachers and more “minority” teachers so that there will be a better “environment for the students.” more>>>

The Ford Motor Company has upset many conservatives by openly donating thousands of dollars to the “Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.” Ford has announced that it will donate $1,000 to the organization for every Jaguar and Land Rover it sells. Ford has also “sponsored gay pride celebrations, advertised in gay-oriented publications and is trying to redefine the definition of the family to include homosexual marriage.” In an attempt to diffuse the situation, the spokesman for Ford said “Diversity is very important to Ford, and it goes beyond homosexuality.” Currently, more than 54,000 people have pledged to boycott the Ford Motor Company because of their support of gays.
