A YOUTH who said he was punched three times in the face by a black man was himself arrested for racial harassment.
Police on patrol in a car in Timber Hill Road, Caterham, were flagged down by Carl Francis Bright, 19, who claimed a black man walking along the road behind him had assaulted him.
He then ran across the road shouting and swearing at the man calling him a n*****.

Police are hunting a man who sexually assaulted a girl in Merseyside.
The 13-year-old was attacked on Bridge Road, Seaforth, as she walked from the train station on Saturday.

The offender, who may have followed her from the Southport-bound train, sexually assaulted the youngster on a cinder path by the side of the station.

Israel will prevent Hamas lawmakers, elected in this week’s Palestinian election, from travelling freely between the Gaza Strip and West Bank, a senior defence official has said.
Speaking to Israeli radio on Saturday, Amos Gilad, adviser to Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz said: “There is no reason for Israel to grant free passes to VIP Palestinians belonging to an organisation that calls for the destruction of Israel.”

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A new judge cracked down Sunday in a chaotic session of Saddam Hussein’s trial, ordering a co-defendant and a lawyer expelled from the courtroom. The entire defense team left in protest and Saddam was escorted out after a shouting match in which he yelled, “Down with America!”
Despite the turmoil, chief judge Raouf Rasheed Abdel-Rahman pushed ahead, replacing the defense lawyers with court-appointed attorneys and hearing three prosecution witnesses before adjourning the trial until later this week.
It was Abdel-Rahman’s first session at the helm, replacing a jurist who stepped down amid criticism that he was not doing enough to stop Saddam and his half brother, co-defendant Barzan Ibrahim, from dominating the trial with frequent outbursts and disruptions.
Defense lawyers criticized the tough approach, saying it was preventing Saddam and his seven co-defendants from getting a fair trial. The eight could face death by hanging if convicted in the killing of at least 140 Shiites after a July 1982 attempt on Saddam’s life in the town of Dujail north of Baghdad.
Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, who is part of Saddam’s defense team but did not attend Sunday’s session, denounced the court as “lawless” and repeated calls for it to be moved out of Iraq.click here for the rest

Two films examining immigrant life in America, the Hispanic teen drama “Quinceanera” and the Sudanese refugee documentary “God Grew Tired of Us,” won top honors Saturday at the Sundance Film Festival.
“Quinceanera,” written and directed by Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer and featuring a cast loaded with newcomers and unknowns, won both the festival’s jury prize and the audience award for U.S. dramatic films, the latter chosen in voting by Sundance movie-goers.
Starring Emily Rios in a striking film debut as a girl ostracized by her family after she becomes pregnant shortly before her 15th birthday, “Quinceanera” offers a culture-clash portrait of Los Angeles’ Echo Park area, traditionally a Hispanic neighborhood that has become a trendy enclave.
Christopher Quinn’s “God Grew Tired of Us,” which follows three Sudanese boys adjusting to life in the United States after the bloody civil war in their homeland, received both the jury prize and audience award for U.S. documentaries.

Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) — Iran said the United Nations was being “manipulated for political purposes” in its first official observance today of the memory of the Holocaust.
Iran’s mission to the UN explained its position on the measure in a note to the president of the General Assembly that was released today. While condemning genocide as a crime against humanity, the statement said “rendering political judgments on such events and closing the door to any scientific scrutiny” would impede efforts to prevent future atrocities.
“Regrettably, the Zionist regime has routinely attempted to exploit the sufferings of the Jewish people in the past as a cover for its crimes being perpetrated today against Palestinians in the occupied territories, including massacre,” the statement said. “The international community should take strong action against such atrocities of the Zionist regime and not allow it to manipulate humanitarian sentiments.”

VIENNA, Austria - Right-wing British historian David Irving, who has been jailed in Austria pending trial next month on charges of denying the Holocaust occurred, has been writing his memoirs and receiving fan mail, his lawyer said Friday.

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Friday that the United States would cut aid to the Palestinian government unless Hamas abolishes the militant arm of its party and stops calling for the destruction of Israel.
“And if they don’t we won’t deal with them,” Bush said in an interview aired on “The CBS Evening News.”

The U.S. Army in Iraq has at least twice seized and jailed the wives of suspected insurgents in hopes of “leveraging” their husbands into surrender, U.S. military documents show.
In one case, a secretive task force locked up the young mother of a nursing baby, a U.S. intelligence officer reported. In the case of a second detainee, one American colonel suggested to another that they catch her husband by tacking a note to the family’s door telling him “to come get his wife.”

RALEIGH, N.C. - Army officials are investigating allegations that members of the celebrated 82nd Airborne Division appear on a gay pornography Web site, a spokeswoman said Friday.
Authorities at Fort Bragg have begun an inquiry into whether the paratroopers’ actions violated the military conduct code.
Division spokeswoman Maj. Amy Hannah declined to say how many paratroopers are involved or identify their unit within the division. A defense official speaking on condition of anonymity said up to seven soldiers are involved.click here for more

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ordered faster construction of Israel’s West Bank barrier on Wednesday after chairing his first government-level discussion of the disputed project, a senior official said.
The decision, which followed hints by Olmert that he could set Israel’s borders unilaterally should he win March 28 general elections and peace talks remain stalled, drew censure from Palestinians who consider the barrier a land grab.
Roughly half of the 600 km (370 mile) network of fences and concrete barricades has been built, some on occupied land where Palestinians seek statehood. Several parts of the project have been held up by Palestinian appeals to Israel’s Supreme Court.

MEXICO CITY - Mexico insisted Wednesday that the men in military-style uniforms who crossed the Rio Grande River and confronted Texas law officers with guns drawn earlier this week were drug smugglers, not soldiers.
Mexican presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar said the FBI supported that view.
A U.S. law enforcement official confirmed Aguilar’s account, saying the FBI and other agencies found no evidence that the men in uniform were Mexican soldiers. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter is politically sensitive in both countries.
No shots were fired during Monday’s confrontation with at least 10 heavily armed men, U.S. authorities said Tuesday. The traffickers escaped back into Mexico with much of the marijuana, though they abandoned more than a half-ton of marijuana as they fled and set fire to one of their vehicles.

With the release of Osama bin Laden’s latest media communiqué offering a truce to the US, President Bush must decide whether to stick to the moribund old cliché “we don’t negotiate with terrorists,” or whether he should use this as a potential opportunity to redirect global politics along a path that serves US national interests.
Truth be told, almost all nation-states, including our own, have negotiated with terrorists. Israel’s tough old soldier Yitzhak Rabin buried the hatchet with Yasser Arafat, and thus engendered a peace process that, despite many fits and starts, has steadily moved toward the creation of an independent and democratic Palestinian state. A vocal minority called Rabin soft on terrorism, but most Israelis understood he was acting in the country’s best interests. President Reagan was credited for negotiating the release of American hostages with Iran, the leading state-sponsor of terror in modern times.

Herndon’s actions reflect a national phenomenon about day laborers: Every day, workers gather in about 500 US parking lots and main streets (and increasingly, work centers), hoping they’ll be picked for construction or other jobs by drive-up employers, according to a study released this week by the University of California in Los Angeles.
Here’s the crunch, though: Three-quarters of these workers are illegal immigrants, the study finds. As a result, they’re often stiffed of pay or otherwise abused. These open markets for illegal workers are a visible reason why illegal immigration is such a widespread concern and such a polarizing one - though it need not be.

Seventy percent disagreed with the statement, and 62% disagreed with it strongly, according to the survey, which was published in the left-wing Guardian daily newspaper.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Judges in the trial of Saddam Hussein tried to remove a newly appointed chief judge Tuesday, a dispute that forced an abrupt postponement of the proceedings and deepened the turmoil in what was supposed to be a landmark in Iraq’s political progress.
Saddam’s lawyers were quick to capitalize on the disarray, saying the confusion provided fresh evidence the former leader could not get a fair trial in Iraq. Former U.S. attorney general Ramsey Clark, a member of the defense team, said the trial should be abandoned.
Since its Oct. 19 start, the trial has been defined by delays, chaotic outbursts by Saddam, the assassination of two defense lawyers and a judge’s decision last month to step down after learning that one of the defendants may have been responsible for his brother’s execution.
After the trial’s last session on Dec. 22, the confusion worsened.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - An Indian man who was believed dead caused panic when he returned, causing villagers to think he had come back as a ghost, the Times of India reported Monday.
Villagers and family members have ostracized him, forcing Raghuvanshi to file a complaint with local police. The village council has demanded he prove he is not a ghost, but the paper did not say what kind of proof the elders wanted.
Raghuvanshi’s troubles arose after he was jailed last year. In prison, he was admitted to hospital with a stomach ailment from which he recovered but a distant relative told his family he had died.

LONDON (Reuters) - A British dentist has been banned from working after allowing her unqualified boyfriend to carry out dental work on patients in her surgery, the profession’s UK regulatory body said Tuesday.
Mojgan Azari was found guilty of serious professional misconduct for letting boyfriend Omid Amidi-Mazaheri work at her practices in south London between 2002 and 2003, the General Dental Council (GDC) said.
The boyfriend worked on more than 600 people, drilling out cavities without local anesthetic and installing expensive fillings that crumbled within days, often leaving patients in agony, the BBC said.

WASHINGTON - The White House is refusing to reveal details of tainted lobbyist Jack Abramoff’s visits with President Bush’s staff.
Abramoff had “a few staff-level meetings” at the Bush White House, presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said Tuesday. But he would not say with whom Abramoff met, which interests he was representing or how he got access to the White House.
Since Abramoff pleaded guilty two weeks ago to conspiracy, mail fraud and tax evasion charges in an influence-peddling scandal, McClellan has told reporters he was checking into Abramoff’s meetings. “I’m making sure that I have a thorough report back to you on that,” he said in his press briefing Jan. 5. “And I’ll get that to you, hopefully very soon.”
McClellan said Tuesday that he checked on it at reporters’ requests, but wouldn’t discuss the private staff-level meetings. “We are not going to engage in a fishing expedition,” he said.

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) — Mexico took the unusual step of opening an investigation into the killing of a man officials said was shot while sneaking into California, using the death to again draw attention to a contentious U.S. anti-immigration measure.

“This occurrence does no more than provide evidence that only a law that guarantees legal entry and is respectful of human rights can resolve the migratory problem both countries face,” Ruben Aguilar, the chief spokesman for President Vicente Fox, said Monday.
Many Mexicans oppose the U.S. measure, which would build more border fences, make illegal entry a felony and enlist military and local police to help stop undocumented migrants.

(CNN) — U.S. border patrol agents investigating a caved-in road discovered a tunnel linking the United States and Mexico, the third such passage found in three years near the San Ysidro, California, crossing, authorities said Wednesday.
Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, said agents found the 35-foot long, 3-foot-by-3-foot tunnel on Monday.
“It’s unclear what it was used for, but inside we found trash and other evidence indicating people had been inside recently,” Mack said.

NEW ORLEANS - Mayor Ray Nagin apologized Tuesday for a Martin Luther King Day speech in which he predicted that New Orleans would be a “chocolate” city once more and asserted that “God was mad at America.”
“I said some things that were totally inappropriate. … It shouldn’t have happened,” Nagin said, explaining he was caught up in the moment as he spoke to mostly black spectators, many of them fearful of being shut out of the city’s rebuilding.
During the speech Monday, Nagin, who is black, said that the hurricanes that hit the nation in quick succession were a sign of God’s anger toward the United States and toward black communities, too, for their violence and infighting. He also said New Orleans has to be a mostly black city again because “it’s the way God wants it to be.”

In October 2005, about fifteen Romanians illegally settled down with their caravans
on the peaceful French town of Ensisheim in Alsace, near the German border. Despite the numerous problems these squatters had brought along with them, the Police chose to intervene more than a year later, on the 11th of January 2006.
The Romanians, warned before hand of the Police arrival, left the place for a while. When the Police came to check the squatters identification, they only found a dozen empty caravans.
Once the Police had left, Mayor Michel Habig and his employees took this one time opportunity to burn down the empty caravans.
He told the journalists:”Something had to be done about this repulsive and dirty garbage dump.”
