PJB “A Good Man in Evil Times”
December 30th, 2006 under Top Stories. [ Comments: none ]

gerald ford.bmp Patrick J. Buchanan - December 29, 2006.
Gerald R. Ford was a good man who served his country well in an evil time.
When he took office on Aug. 9, 1974, and declared, “Our long national nightmare is over,” Ford did not fully appreciate that those who had done the most to create the nightmare were still here. The establishment that Nixon had humiliated in his 49-state landslide, having just effected a coup d’etat, had crawled back into power. Read more »

Saddam Hussein, both mourned and despised
December 30th, 2006 under Israel & Jewish Issues, Real History, Top Stories. [ Comments: 1 ]

saddamhussein.bmp DALIA NAMMARI RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) - Though much of the world regarded him as a tyrant, Saddam Hussein was mourned by Palestinians Saturday as a generous patron who remained one of their staunchest allies, right up until the moment of his death.

Saddam had rejected peace with Israel, sent money to the families of suicide bombers and welcomed many Palestinian refugees to Iraq. As he stood on the gallows, his last words reportedly were: “Palestine is Arab.” Read more »

Misleading and Inflammatory comments by Duke District Attorney, lead to Ethics Charges
December 29th, 2006 under Top Stories. [ Comments: 6 ]

nifong.jpg RALEIGH, N.C. - Ethics charges filed against the prosecutor at the center of the Duke lacrosse sexual assault case might constitute a conflict of interest that forces him off the case, legal experts said.
The bar cited 41 quotations and eight paraphrased statements made to newspaper and TV reporters, saying many of them amounted to “improper commentary about the character, credibility and reputation of the accused.”
Among them:
• Referring to the lacrosse players as “a bunch of hooligans.”
• “I am convinced there was a rape, yes, sir.”
• “One would wonder why one needs an attorney if one was not charged and had not done anything wrong.”
Nifong also is charged with breaking a rule against “dishonesty, fraud, deceit and misrepresentation.” Read more »

Nationalism on the rise in Japan
December 29th, 2006 under Race, Top Stories. [ Comments: 3 ]

japan.jpgTOKYO - On a pleasant November morning, some 300 Japanese executives paid $150 each to hear a lanky math professor named Masahiko Fujiwara give a secular sermon on restoring Japan’s greatness. Mr. Fujiwara spoke quietly, without notes, for 80 minutes. His message, a sort of spiritual nationalism, rang loudly, though: Japan has lost its “glorious purity,” its samurai spirit, its traditional sense of beauty, because of habits instilled by the United States after the war. “We are slaves to the Americans,” he said. Meat and milk from cloned animals may not appear in supermarkets for years despite being deemed by the government as safe to eat. But don’t be surprised if “clone-free” labels appear sooner.

Ben & Jerry’s, for one, wants consumers to know that its ice cream comes from regular cows and not clones. The Ben & Jerry’s label already says its farmers don’t use bovine growth hormone.

“We want to make sure people are confident with what’s in our pints,” company spokesman Rob Michalak said. “We haven’t yet landed on exactly how we want to express that publicly.” Read more »

A group of six African-American teens, who took a moment to first cover their faces, approached the four Pacifica teens, who happened to be Caucasian, and made a derogatory comment against white people. They attacked one Pacifica boy by punching him in the mouth. His tooth cut through his lip, causing it to bleed, and he fell to the ground. While he was on the ground, one of the attackers kicked him in the ribs. As his friends ran to his aid, they, too, were hit on the face. No one was robbed. Read more »

Streetbeat2.jpgTempe, Ariz. - A police sergeant won’t be disciplined for his role in a television program that showed him asking two black men to perform a rap song to get out of a littering ticket, officials said. Sgt. Chuck Schoville, a 25-year department veteran, stopped the two men in August in a mall parking lot after seeing a motorist toss a paper bag from his window. The stop appeared on a segment of “StreetBeat,” which showed Schoville talking to the driver about the consequences of a littering ticket and asking the passenger to pick up the litter — as well as perform a rap song. According to the review, the driver, Louis Baker said the exchange “made him feel violated, categorized and confused.” An administrative review by the police department concluded that Schoville failed to make clear that the rap request was separate from enforcement, and the televised segment

California School District Changes Class Schedule to Accommodate Immigrants
December 23rd, 2006 under Heather Wright, Immigration, Top Stories. [ Comments: 3 ]

mexican-children.gifA Southern California school district where 92 percent of the students are Mexican immigrants has extended its winter break an extra week, to give immigrant families time to travel home to Mexico and Central America for Christmas. “What we had experienced before is that people would take a little extra time off at Christmas and miss school,” Santa Ana Unified School District spokeswoman Susan Brandt said Tuesday. “Some of our families do choose to go back and visit relatives in Mexico. That was the issue.” She said the travel plans of immigrant families were one factor considered and that teachers also appreciated the longer break. The additional days will be made up at other times in the school year. “This issue tends to trigger a lot of reaction from different sides but it wasn’t a political decision,” Brandt said. More>>>
