DURHAM, N.C. - The prosecutor who led the now-discredited rape case against three Duke University lacrosse players was held in criminal contempt of court Friday for lying to a judge when pursuing charges against the athletes.
Superior Court Judge W. Osmond Smith III sentenced Mike Nifong to a day in jail. The former Durham County district attorney, who was already stripped of his law license and had resigned from office, had faced as many as 30 days.
“If what I impose with regard to Mr. Nifong would make things better or different for what’s already happened, I don’t know what it would be or how I could do it,” Smith said. Nifong showed no visible reaction when Smith handed down the sentence, and he left the courtroom with his wife, Cy Gurney. Continued>>>

Dr. Gene Rogers had a pretty good idea of what was coming when he saw his supervisor and a county security officer arrive at his office door. His supervisor was holding paperwork; the security guard was holding an empty box.
Dr. Gene Rogers knew what they had come to do, and why they were doing it. As the medical director for Sacramento County’s Indigent Services program for the better part of the past decade, Dr. Rogers has waged a long fight against the central California county’s practice of providing non-emergency medical care to illegal immigrants — a policy he says violates federal law and results in the poorest American citizens being denied the care they deserve. Lovett Williams feared something was terribly amiss when he didn’t see his 11-year-old twin grandsons outside their Penn Hills house after school yesterday afternoon.
“I knew something was wrong, because they usually get home at 3:30 and they come get me,” said Mr. Williams, who lives across the street on Richey Drive from his grandchildren.
“So I went to the house and I used my keys to open the door. There was blood everywhere. Everywhere. Blood all over the house. Downstairs, up the steps.” Read more »
MISSOURI – Missouri Governor Matt Blunt wants water patrol, highway patrol and capitol police to crack down on illegal immigration. Some think the new initiative could hurt community connections in Kansas City.
In announcing his new initiative, the governor highlighted a crime in Newark where an illegal immigrant, who was previously arrested for child rape and released on bail, was among those charged in the murder of three promising young college students.
Blunt said, identifying the murderer as an illegal immigrant when he was originally arrested could possibly have prevented the murders. Read more »

FORT MEADE, Md. - A military jury recommended a reprimand Wednesday for the only officer court-martialed in the Abu Ghraib abuse scandal, sparing him any prison time for disobeying an order to keep silent about the abuse investigation.
The jury had acquitted Army Lt. Col. Steven L. Jordan a day earlier of all three charges directly related to the mistreatment of detainees at the U.S.-run prison in Iraq.
Those acquittals absolved Jordan, 51, of responsibility for the actions of 11 lower-ranking soldiers who have already been convicted for their roles at Abu Ghraib. The allegations surfaced after the release of photographs showing U.S. soldiers grinning alongside naked detainees held in humiliating positions at the prison. MORE>>>
FAIRFIELD, Ohio (Reuters) - When 300 U.S. immigration agents surrounded the chicken processing plant where Danny Alvarez-Reyes works, he did the only thing he could think of: he gave his coat to a scared friend determined to hide in the walk-in freezer.
Alvarez-Reyes, 27, works legally at the Koch Food plant near Cincinnati and could only watch as co-workers were rounded up during a raid on Tuesday that netted 160 illegal workers.
But after an exhausting day trying to help his friends’ families, Alvarez-Reyes was still worried about the five co-workers he watched hide in the giant freezer. MORE>>>
MOUNT HOLLY, NJ — The Burlington County sheriff is researching the possibility of deputizing sheriff’s officers and corrections officers for immigration enforcement duties.
Sheriff Jean Stanfield said she is collecting information about requirements and training for a U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement program to decide if it makes sense for those officers to participate.
The program allows the secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to permit designated state and local officers to enforce immigration law, such as by reviewing databases to determine whether an individual is an illegal alien and eligible for deportation. Read more »
Combined math and reading scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) for the high school class of 2007 were the lowest in eight years — a trend the College Board attributed largely to the “good news” that a more diverse pool of students is taking the exam. The number of black students taking the SAT rose 6 percent, and the number of test-takers calling themselves “Other Hispanic, Latino or Latin American” (a group that does not include Puerto Ricans or Mexican Americans) rose 27 percent. The College Board noted that by some measures, the gap between some test-takers and the overall cohort has narrowed. But it remains large, and there were only mixed improvements among different racial groups. Combined reading and math scores for blacks slipped one point to 862, scores in the category “Mexican or Mexican American” rose two points to 921 and scores for Asians rose four points to 1092 (on a 1600 point scale). These black supremacists were defending Michael Vick, the confessed dog killer, just because he is black. Now they aren’t saying much after he has confessed.
Even the NAACP joined in in defending Vick. Where was all of this non-judgmental writing when the Duke players were accused? Instead it was opinion pieces about white priviledge and the hardships of black hookers.
After the horrible details have come out, the NAACP still supports Vick. More here>>>
