Some in Fairfax Public Housing Make Six Figures
September 30th, 2007 under Top Stories. [ Comments: 1 ]

Hundreds of families living in housing subsidized by Fairfax County taxpayers exceed income caps designed to ensure that only the neediest receive assistance, a review of county records shows.

In the most extreme cases, Fairfax is underwriting rents for families making well into six figures: One household getting help makes more than $216,000 a year; another, $184,000. Dozens of others — making $60,000, $70,000, $90,000 — exceed eligibility caps. And they do so with the tacit approval of county housing administrators, who do little to encourage occupants to move on when their fortunes improve. Read more »

fianceekiller.jpgAfter nine months of dating, Linc Bullard knew Amanda Brown was the one. So last Thursday, while the couple sat chatting in Brown’s home in Taylor after a fun-filled evening at a concert, Bullard made the declaration. “Let’s do it,” he recalled saying. “Let’s get married.”Brown, however, wouldn’t live to tell her parents the good news. Around 2:30 p.m. the next day, as she sat in a truck waiting on a friend who was inside the Henry Ford Health System Clinic on Holbrook Road in Hamtramck, a man rode up on a bicycle and shot Brown in the forehead and shoulder. He left her body there and took the truck. When Bullard got the call about the shooting, he left work and sped along I-75 to the scene. Brown’s body was already gone.

When he got to the hospital, she was on life support. “The doctor told me there was no hope,” he said. Source>>> Follow Up Suspect Caught>>>

Damascus says Israel launched the air raid on September 6, bombing an empty area after air defence systems confronted the aircraft.

Farouq al-Shara said on Saturday that the Israelis “are making up things to justify an aggression in the future. They are playing on public opinion to mislead it.”

Rutgers English Professor Attacks Commercial University Athletics
September 28th, 2007 under Race, Top Stories. [ Comments: 2 ]

rutgers professor dowling.jpgNEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — On the morning this week when the Rutgers football team reached No. 10 in the national rankings, Prof. William C. Dowling retreated four centuries to a favorite poem. It was John Donne’s “Valediction Forbidding Mourning,” the day’s topic in English 219, an introductory course in lyric literature. Dr. Dowling had set aside all 80 minutes for plumbing Donne’s 36 lines.

But now, just as Rutgers’s recent triumphs in football and basketball might seem to have justified the university’s investment of tens of millions of dollars, Dr. Dowling has answered in his own subversive way. His memoir of the decade-long campaign against high-stakes athletics at Rutgers, “Confessions of a Spoilsport,” has just been published by Penn State University Press. It is his valediction, and its tone, far from mournful, is defiant. Read more »

Hateful speech isn’t hateful action
September 28th, 2007 under Editorials, Race, Top Stories. [ Comments: 12 ]

Christian Science Monitor, censorship8.jpgNew York - Here’s a quick news quiz: What do the Jena 6, San Diego Padres outfielder Milton Bradley, and the protests against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s appearance at Columbia University have in common?

In all three cases, Americans appear to have forgotten the difference between hateful speech and hateful action. And when we lose sight of that distinction, we lose what should be most distinctive about America itself.

Start with the six African American teenagers who were arrested for attempted murder last December in the beating of a white classmate in Jena, La. The arrests came after several other racial incidents in Jena, including white students hanging nooses from a tree at their school to warn blacks against sitting under it. Blacks complained that the whites who hung the nooses were simply suspended from school, while the African Americans who beat their classmate faced criminal charges. Read more »

New Jewish interest group seeks to strengthen stranglehold on politics

bush israel4.jpgNow, a group of conservatives and Republicans with close ties to the White House have formed their own enterprise, Freedom’s Watch, landing on the political scene with a $15 million ad campaign to defend President Bush’s Iraq war strategy.

But this is just the start. Its organizers don’t see themselves as the single-cause Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, who aimed to sink John Kerry’s presidential bid in 2004. Instead, they hope to fill what they say is a void on the right, becoming a permanent, well-financed conservative voice on social, economic and national security issues.

“We decided to build something that transcends election cycles,” said Bradley Blakeman, the president of Freedom’s Watch and a former deputy assistant to Bush. “What we decided was to build an organization that is a never-ending campaign.”  Read more »

School crimes under wraps: Assaults, robberies not always reported to police

black momma2.jpgKing County prosecutors on Wednesday charged two Seattle teenagers in a sexual assault on a developmentally disabled female classmate in a Rainier Beach High School restroom in June — an incident that school officials never reported to police.

A Seattle P-I review of police and Seattle Public Schools records shows that case isn’t the only likely crime that wasn’t reported to police. While a majority of incidents on school campuses were recorded into the district’s safety and security logs and reported to police if necessary, some incidents weren’t — including cases of assaults and strong-arm robberies.

In a few cases, parents or victims say school officials urged them not to report the crimes to police at all. Read more »

A family member said Steven graduated from Seminole High and was attending St. Petersburg College, where Mary was also a student. The Cornell family declined to comment further.”

About 1,000 citizens of other countries have permits that allow them to carry a concealed gun in Utah and 30 states that have an agreement with Utah. Most are Canadians; others are from countries including Japan, Switzerland, Aruba, Mongolia, Mexico and the Republic of Congo. Read more »
