The strain of the HIV virus which predominates in the United States and Europe has been traced back to Haiti by an international team of scientists. The strain passed from Haiti to the US in about 1969 before spreading further, says the team in the Proceedings of the US National Academy of Sciences.

They hope knowing this could help find a cure for HIV, which can lead to Aids. Read more »

A dormitory matron at Oprah Winfrey’s school for disadvantaged girls in South Africa has been suspended amid allegations of serious misconduct.No details were disclosed about the alleged offense at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls at Henley on Klip, just south of Johannesburg.

German police raided the home of a leading member of the far-right National Democratic Party on Tuesday. He is accused of distributing music containing illegal lyrics.

German police investigating the distribution of illegal far-right music said they had raided the home of a senior member of the National Democratic Party on Tuesday.

The man, who was not named, is a member of the national executive board of the National Democratic Party (NPD) and is accused of distributing CDs of music containing illegal lyrics. More than 100 officers searched his home in the eastern state of Thuringia and the homes of other people in the northern state of Lower Saxony. Read more »

The fact that 11 of the 18 wildfire victims lying in UCSD Medical Center’s burn unit are illegal immigrants with no apparent health coverage highlights the daunting financial challenge hospitals face in providing long-term, intensive care for all those who need it.

“These are the most expensive kinds of cases, but we don’t look at these patients and say, oh, because they aren’t legal residents, we’ll stop providing care or stop changing their bandages,” said Dr. Thomas McAfee, UCSD’s physician-in-chief. “It’s part of our ethic to continue to provide this care no matter what.”

According to the Mexican Consulate in San Diego, the burn victims are from central and southern Mexico, and include one woman. Four are in critical condition. All were rescued north of Tecate last week, said consulate spokesman Alberto Lozano, and it is suspected they had crossed the border illegally before coming face to face with the Harris fire. CRYSTAL RIVER — Rich and Chantal Dolata try to decorate their Softails Tavern bigger and better each Halloween.

This year, the dim orange and black watering hole in Crystal River is full of body parts, corpses and even a coffin.

But a new decoration has raised the ire of a handful of passers-by.

From a tree out front, the Dolatas used a thick rope noose to hang a life-sized dummy, barefoot and dripping fake blood.

“It’s just a Halloween decoration,” Chantal Dolata, 40, said Tuesday.

WILMINGTON — Wilmington police need your help finding a murder suspect.

Officers responded to the 1400 block of S. Second Street a little before 11 p.m. Sunday.
They found a man lying on the ground, who had been shot.

Crews rushed the victim to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he died.

Donald “Donnie” Farrell, a 19-year-old Rowan University student beaten Saturday night, died as a result of a ruptured blood vessel from either a punch or a kick to the neck, according to an autopsy report released Tuesday.

The force of the blow to Farrell’s neck caused a laceration to the right vertebral artery, a major blood vessel that carries blood to the brain, Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Bernie Weisenfeld said. Read more »

Mandatory program ‘treats’ politically incorrect attitudes

A mandatory University of Delaware program requires residence hall students to acknowledge that “all whites are racist” and offers them “treatment” for any incorrect attitudes regarding class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality they might hold upon entering the school, according to a civil rights group.

“Somehow, the University of Delaware seems terrifyingly unaware that a state-sponsored institution of higher education in the United States does not have the legal right to engage in a program of systematic thought reform. The First Amendment protects the right to freedom of conscience – the right to keep our innermost thoughts free from governmental intrusion. It also protects the right to be free from compelled speech,” said a letter from Samantha Harris, director of legal and public advocacy for The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education to university President Patrick Harker. NEW YORK - The United States is starting to look like a slowpoke on the Internet. Examples abound of countries that have faster and cheaper broadband connections, and more of their population connected to them.

What’s less clear is how badly the country that gave birth to the Internet is doing, and whether the government needs to step in and do something about it. The Bush administration has tried to foster broadband adoption with a hands-off approach. If that’s seen as a failure by the next administration, the policy may change. Read more »

Berlin police said Monday that they arrested 15 people after clashes between groups from the German capital’s Turkish and Kurdish immigrant communities.The violence Sunday night, in which 18 officers were injured, followed a demonstration calling for unity between Turks and Kurds in the Kreuzberg neighborhood, a district with a large Turkish community.

Claudia Schmid, head of the domestic security agency’s Berlin branch, told the Inforadio station that more “emotional confrontations between Kurds and Turks” could be expected. Read more »

HOUSTON — Two Houston parents have admitted to using cocaine after four of eight children tested positive for the illegal drug, officials told KPRC Local 2 Friday. 

Houston police said they were concerned about the conditions in the family’s northwest Houston apartment. A Child Protective Services spokeswoman said the couple, eight children and an invalid grandmother lived together in the one-bedroom apartment. 

“There were concerns about the sanitary conditions of the home. There were roaches, ants,” CPS spokeswoman Estella Olguin said. Read more »

James Watson is not a racist, he’s a Darwinist! 

In a recent interview with London’s The Sunday Times, noted scientist, James Watson set off an international firestorm when he was quoted as saying that he is “inherently gloomy about the prospects of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours…” Watson then added that he would like for everyone to be equal, but “people who have to deal with black employees find this is not true.”
Watson is not being bigoted in the sense that he is expressing a personal prejudice against black people. In fact, he is being quite “reasonable” given his evolutionary beliefs about the nature of man and reality. According to Watson, “There is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically. Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so.” (James D. WASHINGTON - It’s a nickname no principal could be proud of: “Dropout Factory,” a high school where no more than 60 percent of the students who start as freshmen make it to their senior year. That dubious distinction applies to more than one in 10 high schools across America.

“If you’re born in a neighborhood or town where the only high school is one where graduation is not the norm, how is this living in the land of equal opportunity?” asks Bob Balfanz, the researcher at Johns Hopkins University who defines such a school as a “dropout factory.”

There are about 1,700 regular or vocational high schools nationwide that fit that description, according to an analysis of Education Department data conducted by Johns Hopkins for The Associated Press. Germany has inaugurated a new museum at the site of the Nazi concentration camp where diarist Anne Frank died. The new exhibition centre at Bergen-Belsen, in the north of Germany, highlights the fates of those who died at the camp during World War II.

Among the exhibits are the drawings and diaries of Jews imprisoned there, plus video statements by survivors.

Some 100 survivors were at the ceremony at the camp, where an estimated 50,000 Jews perished during the Holocaust. MORE>>>

BERLIN (Reuters) - Passengers on a German train mistook a Halloween reveler dressed up as a gore-covered zombie for a murder victim and called the police.

The 24-year-old man fell into a drunken slumber on his way home from a Halloween party in Hamburg, police in the northern town of Bad Segeberg said Monday.

Believing his hands and face were smeared with blood, passengers alerted police after getting no response from him. Read more »

WASHINGTON - Two-thirds of parents say their children will trick-or-treat this Halloween, but fewer minorities will let their kids go door to door, with some citing safety worries, a poll shows.

The survey found that 73 percent of whites versus 56 percent of minorities said their children will trick-or-treat on Wednesday.

That disparity in the survey is similar to the difference in how people view the safety of their neighborhoods, according to the poll by The Associated Press and Ipsos. Lower-income people and minorities are more likely to worry that it might not be safe to send their children out on Halloween night. Read more »

SAN ANTONIO - A slaying suspect escaped from jail by assuming the identity of another inmate and was on the loose for more than six hours before authorities realized he was gone, officials said. He was still at large Monday.

The man who escaped, David Sauceda, 27, walked out of jail early Sunday morning when he recited the personal information of his cellmate, Michael Garcia, according to the sheriff’s department.

An unidentified person had posted bond for Garcia, who is in jail on a felony auto theft charge. When officers went to retrieve him, Sauceda stepped forward and gave Garcia’s serial number to a jail employee, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said.  MORE>>>

HIRIYA, Israel - From the top of the reeking Hiriya landfill one can spot the Tel Aviv hospital where former Israeli leader Ariel Sharon lies crippled by a devastating stroke.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, President Shimon Peres, Sharon’s sons Omri and Gilad and hundreds of other officials and friends gathered at the monumental eyesore to dedicate the Ariel Sharon Park.

“This is the first time in history that a prime minister and president of a sovereign nation are hosting atop a garbage dump,” said Martin Weyl, who was a main force in turning the dump, which will account for 10 percent of the park, into a recreational site. Read more »

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli intelligence believes that Palestinians would lack the will for a new popular uprising against occupation should an upcoming peace conference fail to meet their expectations, a senior official said on Monday.

Yuval Diskin, head of the Shin Bet internal security agency, told a parliamentary committee that while failure at the conference could provoke some violence, it would not reach the same level as the Intifada, or uprising, that began in 2000 when the last major peace initiative collapsed. A chain of fashion stores has been accused of racism over a window display of black mannequins hanging from the ceiling. 

Branches of All Saints are featuring headless dummies, with chains attached to the neck, dangling with their feet a few inches off the floor.

Police arrived at one branch, in Exeter, to investigate claims that the display was offensive and the Rural Racism Project says it has been “inundated” with complaints calling for it to be removed. Read more »

As if his marital challenges were not enough cause for concern, “Sarco the Sayan” has suddenly emerged as the most infamous accolade of French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The influential French daily Le Figaro last week revealed that the French leader once worked for — and perhaps still does, it hinted — Israeli intelligence as a sayan (Hebrew for helper), one of the thousands of Jewish citizens of countries other than Israel who cooperate with the katsas (Mossad case-officers).

A letter dispatched to French police officials late last winter — long before the presidential election but somehow kept secret — revealed that Sarkozy was recruited as an Israeli spy. The French police is currently investigating documents concerning Sarkozy’s alleged espionage activities on behalf of Mossad, which Le Figaro claims dated as far back as 1983. According to the author of the message, in 1978, Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin ordered the infiltration of the French ruling Gaullist Party, Union pour un Mouvement Populaire. Originally targeted were Patrick Balkany, Patrick Devedjian and Pierre Lellouche. In 1983, they recruited the “young and promising” Sarkozy, the “fourth man”. Read more »

The plan to rebuild Iraq was so vague that those given the job of reconstruction turned to an out-of-date Lonely Planet guide book for help and inspiration.

Former American ambassador Barbara Bodine, who was given the job of helping to reconstruct Iraq, said: “It is a great guide book, but it should not be the basis of an occupation.”

Ms Bodine was one of 170 officials sent to rebuild Iraq after the UK and US invasion toppled Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003.

GLASSBORO, N.J. — A Rowan University student who was attacked Saturday night when he stopped to give directions died Sunday afternoon.

Now, police are looking for at least two men in connection with the killing of 19-year-old sophomore Donald “Donnie” Farrell, of North Jersey.

Students of the university located in Glassboro, Gloucester County, said they were stunned by the attack and death.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran has access to evidence of U.S. support for terrorist groups in the Middle East, a senior Iranian official was quoted as saying on Sunday.

Iran’s new chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, made the allegation in comments to visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan, whose country may soon send troops to hunt down Kurdish guerrillas in northern Iraq.

Even though it was not to start until 11am, we had arrived at 7am to secure a covered patio. Since all the covered patios were already reserved from months prior, it was a first come first serve. Upon arrival we lazily set up the direction signs, the banner and prepared the grill. There was also the NCOAL on-line store items to set up.

As expected, the darkened clouds allowed a light drizzle to land on us as we unsuccessfully battled the no-see-um’s. No see-ums are vicious, nasty flying insects that are hard to see. Their sole reason for living is to seriously annoy mankind. Read more »

On September 21, 2007, a 12-year old white girl named Emily Haddock was home sick from school. Four [maybe five] black males broke into her home and shot her in the head numerous times. Her body was found later that same day by her grandfather. Initially the police described the murder scene as “brutal,” but didn’t elaborate. Almost immediately a shroud enveloped the case and any further details have been carefully suppressed.

The four black males charged are Sherrod Nicholas Harrison, 19, Michael Graham Currie, 18, Van Roger Smith Jr., 16, and Ryan Jermar White, 18. Despite the fact that all of them are adults, including 16-year old Smith, given the crime, and two have extensive criminal records the media, and local police insist on referring to them all as “teens,” in an effort to mitigate what they’ve done . Halle Berry, Hollywood’s leading black actress, has been forced to apologise after making a joke about the size of Jewish people’s noses on a US television chat show.

The Oscar-winning star remarked that a digitally-altered photo of her face made her look like her “Jewish cousin”, during an appearance on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show.

“Oh God, Have I just ruined my career?” she asked.

The word “Jewish” was cut from the dialogue when the show was broadcast on Friday night, but audience members leaked full details of the exchange onto the Internet, prompting Berry, a vociferous critic of Hollywood racism, to issue a full apology.  MORE>>>

EAST LANSING - When British Nationalist Nick Griffin took the podium at a Friday night Michigan State University event, he tried to explain how Islam is a threat to Western civilization.

Protesters wouldn’t have it.

Hurling obscenities and using chants to interrupt his address, rambunctious student organizations forced Griffin to abandon his speech and allow an informal question and answer session.

What followed was an unstructured banter between the speaker and a crowd of roughly 75 protesters. While many attempted to ask Griffin legitimate questions, others shouted obscenities. Read more »

CHICAGO - Four men have been charged with plotting the slaying of a rival in the city’s flourishing trade in bogus immigration documents, authorities said Wednesday.

Three brothers are accused of paying Gerardo Salazar-Rodriguez, 34, to kill Guillermo Jimenez Flores, according to an indictment. The amount was not specified.

Flores was a member of a former fake document ring who had defected and set up his own shop. The indictment said he was shot at an unspecified place in Mexico.

The four men were charged with, among other offenses, murder in aid of racketeering and murder for hire. The two offenses carry a maximum sentence of death.  MORE>>>

HOUSTON - The city’s school system has fired a police officer for creating and distributing a “Ghetto Handbook.” The eight-page booklet, handed out to other police officers at a May roll call, said the definitions it contained would allow readers to speak as if they “just came out of the hood.” It was subtitled “Wucha dun did now?” Gang investigator Roby Morris, 34, had worked for 11 years at the Houston Independent School District before being fired this past week. Morris told investigators he made the booklet to get back at one of his bosses. He also pointed out he is married to a black woman and that they have three children together. More>>>

A Worthington man and a 13-year-old boy are in custody for allegedly sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl.

According to court papers, the girl said the two suspects had inappropriately touched her. The adult suspect is 30-year-old Jose Carmen Fuentes. He’s charged with three counts of criminal sexual conduct. A physical examination showed that the child had been sexually penetrated. Source>>>
