LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. — A 30-year-old woman is charged with attempted murder after she stuffed her newborn baby in a garbage bag, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
According to the BSO, Meshia Morant was staying with Junior and Nadia Lodge at their Lauderdale Lakes apartment June 14 when they arrived home and found a trail of blood leading from the living room to the kitchen.
When the couple found Morant, she was standing in the doorway holding a white garbage bag.”He questioned her and at the time he was questioning her, he heard a baby cry,” BSO spokeswoman Alesha Russell said. “He asked Meshia, ‘Did you have a baby?’ Meshia denied having a baby.”
Detectives said Nadia Lodge took the bag from Morant and found the girl mixed in with the garbage. Her husband dialed 911.”She could have at least let me know,” Nadia Lodge said. “She was staying with me for a little while. You know, she could have let me know.”Asked if she suspected Morant was pregnant, Nadia Lodge said, “Yeah, we all did. She kept denying it.”
Neighbors told Local 10’s Roger Lohse that Morant wore baggy clothes to hide her pregnancy.Detectives said Morant, who is from Jamaica, has been in the country illegally for a few months.Nadia Lodge and her husband were granted temporary custody of the 2-week-old girl, whom they named Destiny, because they said it was no accident that put them in a position to save the child’s life.”I’m sorry that my husband and I got caught in the middle, but in the end, it’s a blessing,” Nadia Lodge said. The baby was not harmed. It was unclear why Morant didn’t want the child.
