The Last Witness

misch1.jpgJuly 21 (Bloomberg) — Rochus Misch, Hitler’s bodyguard, telephonist and messenger, was the last person to escape alive from the bunker where the Nazi leader spent his final days.

Now aged 90 and no longer able to handle the many interview requests that come his way, Misch has decided to publish his story. “Der letzte Zeuge” (“The Last Witness”) is mainly motivated by his desire to set straight details that he says were misrepresented in reconstructions such as the 2004 movie “Der Untergang” (“The Downfall”) starring Bruno Ganz.

Misch’s perspective on “the boss,” as he and his colleagues referred to Hitler, is not the historical one of a racist monster bent on world domination and the extermination of an entire people. He gives us the private Hitler, with minutiae of what he ate (lots of gruel, because of persistent stomach problems), his small acts of kindness toward staff, his insistence on a hot-water bottle for his feet at night and his affection for his dog Blondi.

There are episodes when Misch’s account seems historically irrelevant for those reasons. He was not privy to the meetings that shaped world events and his recollections are often banal: When Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov visited Berlin in November 1940 to seek assurances Germany would not post troops in Finland, Misch remembers the weather.

“I brought a blanket to his limousine because he wanted it to wrap around his legs,” he writes. “It was extremely cold.”

`Few Questions’

Tall, athletic and handsome, Misch had little interest in politics. “The young Rochus had very few questions,” he writes. After training as a sign-painter, he joined the SS in 1937. He was wounded during the invasion of Poland in 1939.

He was drafted into Hitler’s personal “Begleitkommando” in 1940. Proud at being entrusted with such proximity, he was also determined to keep away from the front.

“Anything but that,” he says.

So he became a hard-working member of the team — so much so, that he was based in the Fuehrerbunker until the very end. Even after the corpses of Hitler and Eva Braun had burned to cinders, Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels refused to let Misch go. Misch was finally released on May 2, 1945, to be caught by the Soviet army and imprisoned in gulags for nine years.   MORE>>>

The Bloomberg article also doesn’t dispense with insinuations. Instead of accepting that Misch didn’t know what wasn’t happening, he “lacked curiosity and courage”, according to the article.
Of interest also is another book -Ein anderer Hitler- written by someone who knew Hitler very well: Hermann Giesler, architect, who spent countless hours with Hitler in discussing building and construction projects. All those who knew Hitler learned of the atrocity stories after the war, including people who had been in the concentration camp. The book -Teufel und Verdammte-, for example written by Kautsky, Jew and social democrat, only in the second printing in 1946 introduced the gas chambers. In the first printing he hadn’t heard of them yet.

What do you expect from a Bloomberg article? Of course they are going to say hr had a lack of couragr. But remember Misch was wounded in Poland so he couldn’t be a coward. Bloomberg on the other hand I am sure never served in combat, not even for Israel . Another worthless Jew.
