Federal agents have spent three weeks sweeping the state for illegal immigrants in what they lauded as the largest fugitive operation ever in California. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested 1,157 people in the country illegally.

Tens of thousands of people are queuing at Zimbabwean banks in a desperate bid to withdraw cash before its value evaporates. Crowds of savers lined up to remove their money after the daily bank withdrawal limit was raised to 20,000 Zimbabwean dollars - about 17 pounds or $35.00.

An Afghan policeman opened fire on U.S. troops inside a police station in eastern Afghanistan, killing an American soldier and wounding several other people, officials said Monday.

U.S. forces then killed the policeman that opened fire.

The shooting took place Sunday in Paktia province after American troops and Afghan police brought militant suspects to the station. An officer already at the station then opened fire, a NATO official said on condition of anonymity because the information wasn’t supposed to be released publicly. Source>>>

WASHINGTON — Two sex assaults and an armed robbery that occurred in the past week on or near American University’s campus are being investigated by police.

The most recent incident was the armed robbery, which occurred at the corner of Nebraska Avenue and Van Ness Street at about 4 a.m. on Sunday.

A student and another person were walking in the area when they were approached by three men, police said. Two of the men stood in front of the victims while a third man stood behind them. One man demanded one of the victims’ purse, police said, and when she refused, another man tried to grab it from her. The woman then attempted to pull away from the robber and he pulled a gun and pulled the trigger. However, the gun did not discharge. A Department of Homeland Security officer then heard the commotion and approached, but the robbers fled the scene. Neither victim was hurt. Source>>>

LUSBY, Md. — Two girls’ bodies were found in a freezer in Lusby home after a third girl jumped from a second-story window Friday to escape her adopted mother, according to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office.

A 7-year-old girl was left unattended in a locked room at the home on Buckskin Trail, investigators said. After jumping from the window, she was found by residents on Pawnee Trail, who called the sheriff’s office. The girl appeared to be extremely abused and neglected and is receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital.Friday night, the 7-year-old girl’s adopted mother, 43-year-old Renee Bowman, contacted the sheriff’s office about her missing daughter, authorities said. She confessed to beating the girl with a hard-heeled shoe and was arrested, investigators said. Source>>>

The other night American television entertained the masses by presenting a debate between two men vying for the most powerful position on earth. It took only a few minutes to realize nothing much has changed. The Democratic presidential nominee claimed the other day that the failed economic policies is President Bush’s fault. Barack Husein Obama said: “we also have to recognize that this is the final verdict on eight years of failed economic policies promoted by George Bush…that basically says that we can shred regulations and consumer protections and give more and more to the most, and somehow prosperity will trickle down.”

The article also mentions Franklin D. Raines, who at the time was Fannie Mae’s chairman and executive officer. Today Mr. Franklin D. Raines is the senior economic adviser to the Obama campaign.

– In a move that could help increase home ownership rates among minorities and low-income consumers, the Fannie Mae Corporation is easing the credit requirements on loans that it will purchase from banks and other lenders. Fannie Mae, the nations biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people… Demographic information on these borrowers are sketchy. But at least one study indicates that 18 percent of the loans in the sub-prime market went to black borrowers, compared to 5 % of loans in the conventional market. Home ownership has, in fact exploded among minorities during the economic boom of the 1990’s. The number of mortgages extended to Hispanic applicants jumped by 87.2 per cent from 1993 to 1998, according to Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. Barack Obama has finally made his long-awaited pilgrimage to Israel, a rite of passage that no aspiring American politician, let alone a presidential candidate, can afford to miss or ignore. There (or rather here), Obama uttered all the politically-correct words that Israeli leaders and especially Israel-firsters back home would want to hear.

He called the creation of Israel in Palestine in 1948 a “miracle,” utterly ignoring the near obliteration of Palestine and   expulsion to the four corners of the world of the vast bulk of its indigenous Christian and Muslim inhabitants. The presidential hopeful told Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that “I have come to communicate to you my fervent support for Israel.” Of course,  he mentioned absolutely nothing about the Israeli campaign of murder and terror against  Gaza,  particularly the year-long harsh blockade of the coastal enclave’s  estimated 1.5 million inhabitants, which has killed and maimed thousands of innocent men, women and children whose only “crime” is that they had dared elect a government the Bush administration and Israel didn’t  like. Predictably, Obama lashed out at Iran, saying that “a situation in which Iran was capable of making nuclear weapons would be “game-changing” and would have repercussions across the world.

Again, he utterly and totally ignored Israel’s estimated 300 nuclear warheads, as if even alluding to this well-known fact was an earth-shaking taboo. Source>>>

The Service Employees International Union has accused the head of its largest California local of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in an alleged corruption scheme that included payments to firms owned by his relatives and expenditures on his Hawaiian wedding and a Beverly Hills cigar club. Tyrone Freeman has been removed from the payroll of the Los Angeles-based local and faces formal dismissal pending an internal hearing, a union spokeswoman said. Freeman went on paid leave last month, following disclosures by The Times about the local’s spending practices. Source>>>

The House vote was expected to be close for the $700 billion rescue plan, but the chance of it passing was put in peril when 132 Republican members of the House voted against it. Only 66 Republicans voted for it.

The impact of the vote was felt even before the voting was concluded. The DOW plunged as the votes were being counted and it was apparent that passage was unlikely. As the voting continued the Dow plummeted to 700 points, then recovered. The GOP rebuff came despite serious lobbying by President Bush and his top team. The National Football League refused to include a print ad recruiting U.S. Border Patrol agents in its 2007 official Super Bowl program because they were uncomfortable with “the sensitive political nature” of the spot, according to a league spokesman. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees the Border Patrol, had offered to pay for the advertisement, which was part of a campaign to boost the number of agents by 18,000. But money wasn’t the issue, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told ABC News.

The ad “was specific to border patrol and mentioned terrorists,” he said. “The game was in Miami, where [immigration] is a sensitive political issue. It made us a little bit uncomfortable.” Aiello said the league’s discomfort stemmed from the ad’s mention of terrorism in a program for the high-profile event as well as how it intertwined terrorism and immigration. A federal grand jury indictment alleges the former executive director of the CIA, Kyle “Dusty” Foggo, was corrupted by lavish vacations in Hawaii and Scotland, expensive meals, a $2,300 cigar humidor and a promise of future employment. The indictment, returned today in San Diego, says Foggo “used his seniority and influence within the CIA” to steer a lucrative CIA contract to a shell company secretly owned by Brent Wilkes, a defense contractor and longtime friend of Foggo. NEW YORK (Reuters) - The chief executive of the failed savings and loan Washington Mutual Inc could get $13.65 million for the 18 days he was on the job, a regulatory filing shows.

Alan Fishman was awarded a $7.5 million signing bonus when he joined the Seattle-based thrift on Sept 7, according to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

His employment agreement also provided for a $6.15 million lump sum payment as severance if he were terminated without cause, the filing shows.

Washington Mutual hired the former chief executive of Brooklyn, New York-based Independence Community Bank Corp to help the thrift rebound from soaring mortgage losses. Source>>>

A Gainesville woman who worked at a local Wachovia Bank branch has been arrested on charges related to the theft of $695,208 from the bank since November, according to an arrest report filed by the Gainesville Police Department.

Letica Renita Risby, 29, of 2322 NE 10th Terrace, was charged Friday with scheme to defraud and grand theft from the Wachovia at 3838 NW 13th St., where she was the vault manager, the report stated.

The theft came to light when Wachovia conducted an internal audit and discovered that the money was missing.

Detectives questioned Risby no Friday and she reportedly confessed to stealing the money on various occasions dating back to Nov. 1, 2007.

The report states that Risby told investigators she would move money from the vault to teller drawers that were not occupied. She would later take the currency from the teller drawers for her personal use, sneaking it out of the bank under her clothing. Source>>>

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) _ As a heavily armed U.S. destroyer patrolled nearby and planes flew overhead Sunday, a Somali pirate spokesman told The Associated Press his group was demanding a $20 million ransom to release a cargo ship loaded with Russian tanks. The spokesman also warned that the pirates would fight to the death if any country tried military action to regain the ship, and a man who said he was the ship’s captain reported that one crew member had died.
Pirates seized the Ukrainian-operated ship Faina off the coast of Somalia on Thursday as it headed to Kenya carrying 33 Russian-built T-72 tanks and a substantial amount of ammunition and spare parts. The ordnance was ordered by the Kenyan government. The guided missile destroyer USS Howard was stationed off the Somali coast on Sunday, making sure that the pirates did not remove the tanks, ammunition and other heavy weapons from the ship, which was anchored off the coast.  Source>>>
