Ghostly voices from a family celebrating Christmas together during the First World War have been heard for the first time in nearly a century.
The recordings provide a fascinating insight into an English family living at a tumultuous time in world history.
Eight phonograph cyclinders, made of beeswax and soap, feature the Smith family from Salisbury in Wiltshire singing carols and discussing ‘daddy being away at war.’ source

These were the days of the Mergenthaler Linotype and the syndicated newspaper.
Radio was in its infancy and only for the military and maritime. Too expensive for average people.
So, a population could be easily stampeded into war.
Today we have a pesky, growing, won’t-go-away, internet minority. It’s not so minor anymore and the old “shredded tree” newspapers are dying.
