Dressed in red berets and printed white T-shirts, the Guardian Angels will establish their only Australian chapter in Canberra beginning with a small group of committed volunteers.
The safety patrol will focus on five areas in Canberra, wearing their distinctive red berets at Charnwood, Kippax, Lanyon and the Woden and Civic bus interchanges.
Local founder Damian Heffernan said he was inspired to establish the Canberra chapter after hearing about the fatal stabbing of Elizabeth Booshand at Charnwood shops in July 2008.
He said the incident was worrying, especially given the horrific event allegedly occurred in front of several children.
”I thought this is shocking that we can’t think about current and future generations safely going down and picking up fish and chips on a Friday night,” Mr Heffernan said.
Police Minister Simon Corbell said Canberra usually ranked as one of Australia’s two safest cities and there was no pressing crime problem.
He questioned why there was the need for such a group. ”There is no room for vigilante or paramilitary-type groups in community safety,” he said.
Mr Corbell described Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa as a right-wing conservative commentator and encouraged those involved to give their time to existing organisations working to minimise crime, drug and alcohol problems. More at Source

The Guardian Angels tried to come to Springfield MA a few years back.
Their first night here they were getting ready to start their neighborhood watch foot patrol and a car pulled up with the headlights off.
Two men with AK-47′s got out and sprayed a parked car next to them to ribbons. They didn’t try to hit any of them, they were just putting out the message that gangs run that hell hole, not cops, not community groups.
Needless to say, they left and I don’t think they have been back, of course you won’t catch me in Springfield to find out either.

As for the video of the GAs arrest 02/25/09 Chicago chapter, it was a bad arrest on your behalf, first I am not a supporter of criminals or vigilantes. I do not see any evidence of the alleged property vandalism, not an actual crime committed against a person, and while everyone has a right to defend themselves, including the tagger no one has the right to unlawfully detain and possibly assault another, your explanation offered “he could have hurt himself, us, or others” does not hold validity, law enforcement would advise letting the man go was always an option so as to not escalate the situation to that level. Example: You see an elderly person steal something and not pay for the item, do you stop that person? The answer is no, because that person may have a heart problem, if you come on strong and physically stop that person, they could possibly have a heart attack. Congratulations, you have just made the situation worse. You now have a dead elderly person all because of a $5 item and a vigilante seeking the spotlight.
