Although he has denounced a racist flier that labels the state’s leading Democrats as “Massas,” the flier’s very existence undermines Stroger’s campaign.

Wallace “Gator” Bradley admits that he is one of the people behind the ugly campaign strategy.

The flier uses racist slurs, including “Aunt Je’Mamie,” “White Man’s N.G.G.” and “Cracker Boy,” to describe candidates who are challenging Stroger in the upcoming Democratic primary.

I spoke to Bradley by phone, and he defended the racist speech.

“If there is a backlash, there is a backlash,” he said. “This is bigger than Stroger. The Irish men are in charge of all government agencies but one. There is no way an African-American man can go into an Irish community and split the Irish vote,” Bradley said.

I guess President Obama doesn’t count.

And if Terrence O’Brien, Stroger’s lone white challenger, made Bradley’s argument to Irish-American voters, the black community would be up in arms.

Until now, Stroger’s campaign has been dragging along, stirring up neither controversy nor excitement.

His subtle message targeting black voters — that county government, which provides services that disproportionately impact blacks and Hispanics, should be run by an African American — hasn’t generated the kind of publicity he desired.

But Stroger’s meager campaign staff has done a terrible job, something that reflects poorly on his administrative skills.

For instance, on Wednesday, a positive story about Stroger’s plan to save the county $300 million through cost-cutting measures was overshadowed by the negative publicity surrounding the flier.

Bradley would not apologize for the racist campaigning.

“My reason for putting it out is because our children don’t understand what happened in 1989 in the black community because some black people were upset with Eugene Sawyer because he was mumbling,” Bradley said.

Mayor Daley defeated Sawyer in the 1989 election and has dominated Chicago politics every since.more from chicago suntimes
