In a New Jersey elementary school that is comprised of 300 non-white students: 88% Black and 12% Hispanic, it’s no surprise that one of them brought a gun to school, even at the tender age of 9. In a short interview with a parent of one of the students, a hispanic mother expresses her concern over the incident and, with determination in her voice, says that she will work on registering her daughter into a safer school. Many people watching the upset mother will sympathize with her and fully agree. Of course, who would want their child to be at a daily risk of getting shot in school? But to those of us who see the racial problem, what does this represent, if anything? The hispanic woman’s daughter represents how clean, well-run, safe educational institutions, made up of white students 99.9999999% of the time, are faced with accepting this invasive and steady stream of non-whites. Once too many non-whites are enrolled, the overall progress of the school decreases significantly, and the remaining whites leave. The parents of more than 2,300 Prince George’s County students who failed to get needed vaccinations could face fines of $50 a day and up to 10 days in jail if their children do not meet the state’s immunization requirements, county officials said yesterday.

The threat of legal action is a last resort after months in which Prince George’s has struggled to get its 131,000 students immunized for chicken pox and hepatitis B, as mandated by the state. More than 2,300 students have not been immunized and have been barred from attending schools, almost two months after a Sept. 20 deadline for meeting the requirement.
