Two teens were sentenced Tuesday to 23 years to life in prison for stomping a pregnant girl so badly her fetus died.
Alfonso “Lil’ Al” Price, 16, and Jebrell Wright, 17, were convicted of murder, kidnapping and felonious assault in an April trial.
They lured 18-year-old Kerria Anderson, who was 7½ months pregnant, to an Over-the-Rhine apartment July 11, 2007, where they beat and stomped her, resulting in a still birth. Read more »
The 19-year-old son of a convicted murderer is now facing a murder charge himself, accused of beating a Jefferson Township mother of two to death with a dumbbell in her Lake Hopatcong apartment this past January, authorities said today.
Demetrius Diaz-Bridges is charged with murder and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose in the Jan. 30 killing of Elizabeth O’Brien, authorities said. He was arrested Saturday in his mother’s home in Raleigh, N.C., police and a family member said.
Police say Diaz-Bridges, a former neighbor and friend of the victim’s older son, admitted to killing O’Brien and stuffing her body in the first-floor closet where it was found. Read more »

Witnesses to the attack told police Forrest High School sophomore Karl Koch Jr. was targeted because of the color of his skin.”They started closing in, and all I remember is getting hit,” Koch said.
Moments before her ex-boyfriend was arraigned Friday on murder charges, 21-year-old Laci Green of Westland was described by family friends as a church-going, ambitious young woman who had ended a bad relationship and immersed herself in her nursing studies at Schoolcraft College.
“She went to church all the time,” said Sheila Noon, who worked with Green’s mother, Barbara, at the MotorCity Casino buffet. [Her church probably recommended inter-racial relationships.]
Green, who worked at the casino hotel while attending school, had broken off a six-year relationship weeks ago with a 25-year-old Dearborn Heights defendant identified by police as Robert James-The-First Howard, accused of strangling Green to death early Wednesday morning near her home on Westland’s southwest side. INDIANAPOLIS — A woman was arrested Wednesday night in a road rage beating of an elderly driver earlier in the day, police said. Jessica Vasquez (pictured), 19, was taken into custody after she assaulted Evelyn Page, 81, who she thought was driving slowly in the 6200 block of South Meridian Street, on Indianapolis’ south side, according to Indianapolis Metro police.Police said Vasquez sped around Page and then slammed on her brakes, forcing the elderly woman to stop.
Then, according to police, Vasquez jumped out of her car, opened the driver’s-side door of Page’s car and began beating her. Read more »
(CNN) — Efraim Diveroli’s father hoped his son would become “a nice Jewish doctor or lawyer”.
What he got instead is a 22-year-old international arms dealer who faces a congressional inquiry for allegedly selling old Chinese ammunition to the U.S. military to equip allies in Afghanistan.
Diveroli is president of AEY Inc., a South Florida company which, according to U.S. government documents, has done more than $10 million of business with the U.S. government since 2004.
The papers also reveal the company struck it big in 2007 with contracts totaling more than $200 million to supply ammunition, assault rifles and other weapons to the Afghan National Army and police. The company’s contract said it would get the ammunition from Hungary.
The bridge where state officials told a high-risk sex offender to sleep after his release from prison earlier this month is less than five miles from the home of the woman he raped.
Some of her children go to an elementary school blocks from the bridge. Another goes to the high school about a mile away.
“I’m scared to be at my house now. I’m scared to go around town. I’m scared to run into him. I’m scared for my kids at school,” said Sabrina, 29. She asked that her last name not be used. “I don’t think he has anything to lose now, so who knows what he’ll do.”

I was listening to a local talk show last week and there was a man on by the name of John Rosenthal from an organization called Stop Hand Gun Violence, and I don’t remember the exact figure, but he mentioned the fact that at least 85% of the people killed by handguns are African American. Minneapolis Police began investigating the case, which also caught the attention of two retired NYPD detectives.

A Pineville Police DARE officer and Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office corrections officer were arrested after the DARE officer reportedly made a drug deal with a police informant while on duty Wednesday afternoon at Lessie Moore Elementary School in Pineville, officials said today.
The correction officer’s connection to the deal and operation wasn’t released as the investigation is ongoing.
Much of the undercover drug deal involving the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office Metro Narcotics Division was somehow broadcast over the police scanner, although sheriff’s officials still aren’t sure how. Read more »

Five people face charges of marijuana trafficking in Pickens County, and detectives say an illegal immigrant was the main source of the drugs.
Pickens County deputies worked on the case for months, partnering with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, the Clemson Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. BALTIMORE — Police are searching for the two people who set a tow truck driver on fire around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
According to police, the victim was traveling northbound on Interstate 695 near Route 40 when two black males on the shoulder of the road flagged him down.

A blind homeowner used the wrestling skills he learned more than 30 years ago to overpower an intruder and hold the man at knifepoint until police arrived this morning.
‘I just kind of panicked and just kind of went crazy after that,’ Allan Kieta said. ‘I’ve wrestled all my life. My dad’s a Marine; he taught me some stuff. You’re thinking in your head all this survival stuff.’

The Justice Department lost one of its own to the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal Tuesday as a former high-ranking department attorney pleaded guilty to conflict of interest.
Robert E. Coughlin II admitted in federal court in Washington that he accepted meals, concert tickets and luxury seats at sporting events from a lobbyist while helping the lobbyist’s clients. He pleaded guilty to a single conflict-of-interest charge and faces up to 10 months in prison under a plea deal with the government.
The lobbyist is identified in court documents only as “Lobbyist A,” but details of the relationship make clear that he is Kevin Ring, a former member of Abramoff’s lobbying team and former Capitol Hill staffer who also is under investigation. Read more »

HOUSTON — An arrest has been made in the brutal carjacking that resulted in the stabbing death of a mother of five. Harris County Sheriff’s investigators said they arrested one suspect in the murder of Tina Davila and charges have been filed against an illegal immigrant they say stabbed the woman several times.
Davila was walking into a mobile phone store in northeast Harris County Wednesday afternoon when a man grabbed her keys in an attempt to steal her car. Davila, whose 4-month-old daughter was still in the car, fought the would-be carjacker.
In the struggle, the man repeatedly stabbed Davila before making a getaway in a waiting car driven by an accomplice. The whole brutal attack was captured by the mobile phone store’s security cameras. Read more »
A leading human rights group called on Friday for an independent investigation into the death of a Reuters cameraman and other civilians in Gaza this week, saying Israeli forces may have targeted the media.
Reuters cameraman Fadel Shana, a 23-year-old Palestinian, was killed in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday while covering events in the enclave for the international news agency. He had been filming an Israeli tank dug in about 1,000 yards away.
“Human Rights Watch’s investigations at the site found evidence suggesting that an Israeli tank crew fired recklessly or deliberately at the journalist’s team,” the New York-based group Human Rights Watch said in a statement. Read more »
Israel announced plans Friday to build 100 more homes in two West Bank settlements, one deep inside the territory sought by the Palestinians for their future state.
Israel’s housing minister said Israel never promised to freeze all such construction, although a U.S.-backed peace plan calls for a moratorium on settlement building.

It is still unclear what happened late on Sunday night and early Monday morning at Kibbutz Ein Gedi, next to the Dead Sea.
What is known is that two Scandinavian women tourists, aged 17 and 19, returned to the guest house where they were staying and said they had been raped by three men from the kibbutz.
The women said they had gone late at night to the room of one of the men, where they were later attacked and raped. The guest-house manager called the police who arrested the three suspects. The young men told the police they had had sex with the young women with their full consent.Read more »
KNOXVILLE (WATE) — In testimony Friday for the trial of a man accused as an accessory in a couple’s double murder, the girlfriend of another suspect claimed one of the murder victims was forced to shoot the other.
Daphne Sutton is the former girlfriend of Lemaricus Davidson. He and four others are charged with murdering the couple in January 2007.

Muhlenberg Township police arrested a rookie New York City police officer Thursday after he took $113,000 in a holdup at a Sovereign Bank branch in the township, investigators said.
Christian A. Torres, 21, Queens, who is a New York Police Department Transit Bureau officer, was arrested at Bellevue Avenue and North Fifth Street Highway as he drove away from the bank at 3420 North Fifth Street Highway, police said.
According to court documents:
Torres approached a teller outside the bank shortly after it opened at 8 a.m. and asked for mortgage rates.
Two teachers at a Baltimore, Maryland, high school say they were attacked by students, and one says such assaults are commonplace, according to CNN affiliate WBAL.

A 21-year-old University of Tennessee student was gang-raped, choked and bound in January 2007 before being stuffed inside a trash can while still alive, a federal prosecutor told jurors in opening court statements today.
“The evidence will be when she went into that trash can, she was alive,” Assistant U.S. Attorney David Jennings said this afternoon in U.S. District Court. “Probably, mercifully, Channon Christian died (later that evening).”

EL PASO, Texas - A Fort Bliss soldier and his wife were arrested Tuesday on charges of killing a 2-year-old girl in their care and seriously injuring her older brother while their military parents served overseas.
Investigators were working with the military to reach the children’s parents — their father is stationed in Iraq and their mother in Germany.
Staff Sgt. Nakia Dawkins, 32, and his 29-year-old wife, Shawntrell Dawkins, were booked into the El Paso County jail on charges of capital murder and abuse of a child. Read more »
Jurors didn’t immediately agree to convict Orange Taylor III of murdering a fellow Eastern Michigan University student when deliberations began Monday morning.But early in their discussions, it became clear they would be able to render a verdict based on the evidence, the jury forewoman said.Nearly five hours later, they found Taylor guilty of first-degree felony murder, assault with intent to commit sexual penetration, home invasion and larceny. Their decision will send the 21-year-old to prison for the rest of his life.

PLANO (CBS 11 News) ― Police in Plano have identified the man they arrested Thursday as 30-year-old Stanley Vernell Ledbetter Jr. of Plano. Police believe he may be the serial rapist wanted for terrorizing nearly two dozen women across North Texas since May 2005.
As of Monday afternoon, Ledbetter was in the Dallas County jail on two counts of aggravated sexual assault. His bond was set at $1 million for each count. Police expect those charges will increase as the investigation continues.
Plano police were able to link Ledbetter to one of the charges through a shotgun he recently sold to a Plano pawn shop.
“Plano was able to tie him to the shotgun, which we had the shotgun shell from one of our offenses,” said Lt. Sally Lennom, Dallas Police Department. “It was a home invasion and he forced the complainant to drive to an ATM to take money. He sexually assaulted her and left behind a piece of evidence.
